Broomfield War Memorial: First World War

On 21st September 1920 a brass tablet containing the names of 22 men who had lost their lives while serving in the armed forces was unveiled and dediacted by the Rev. Canon Lake, rector of Chelmsford at St. Mary's Church in Broomfield. The other clergy present were the Vicar of Broomfield, the Rev. Charles Edmunds whose son was one of those commemorated, and the Rev. H. V. Edmunds, chaplain to the Bishop of Sodor and Man.


Private 32572 Percy Beadle, killed by a shell 25-Aug-18, aged 22, East Lancashire Regiment, formerly of the Essex Regiment.

Born at Billericay. Youngest son of William George and Charlotte Eliza Beadle, of the Stables, Broomfield Court, Broomfield.

Buried at Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery, Morbecque, Nord, France.


Acting Captain John Robert William Chamberlin, killed in action 13-Sep-18, aged 20, London Regiment.

Born at Higham's Park. Eldest son of John and May Agnes Chamberlin, of Warwick Lodge, Broomfield.

Buried at Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.


Private 251348 George Clark, killed in action 28-Nov-17 in Palestine, aged 32, Essex Regiment.

Born at Pleshey. Eldest son of Charles and Elizabeth Clark, of Bungalow, Woodhouse Farm, Broomfield. Commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial.

Rifleman O/412 Joseph Copeman, killed in action 14-Oct-18 Rifle Brigade posted to London Regiment (Post Office Rifles).

Born at Broomfield. Son of Daniel & Matilda Copeman of Broomfield Green. Buried at Courrieres Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France.


Rifleman 5606 or 6606 Arthur Alfred Victor Cross died from wounds received in action 12-Oct-16, aged 19, London Regiment.

Born at Eastwood, Only son of Frederick G. & Eva Cross of Broomfield. Buried at Saint Sever Cemeter, France.


2nd Lieutenant Charles Vincent Edmunds, killed in action at First Battle of Gaza 26-Mar-17, aged 33, Essex Regiment.

Born in Leyton. Son of the Rev. Charles Edmunds and Dora Edmunds, of Broomfield Vicarage. Educated at Repton and Cambridge University.

Employed at Seabrook Brothers. Buried at Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.


Major Ashley Gordon Dickson, died from wounds at British Red Cross Hospital No. 10 at Le Treport, France, 18-Jun-17, aged 40, Royal Horse Artillery.

Born Edinburgh. Son of the late Thomas and Mary Dickson, of Edinburgh and Ceylon; husband of Vera Gordon Dickson, of Scravels, Broomfield.

Buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.


Lance Serjeant 702463 John St. Vincent Jervis-Hunter D.C.M., killed in action by a sniper 09-Dec-17, aged 37, London Regiment.

Born in India. Son of the late George and Kate Jervis-Hunter, of "Sylverton," Mussooree, U.P., India; husband of Alice Marie Jervis-Hunter, of "The Nook," Broomfield. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

Private 3/2578 Ben Wilson, died 20-Oct-18, aged 26, 'C' Company, 9th (Service) Battalion, Essex Regiment.

Born in Great Baddow. Son of David and Myra Wilson. His number shows he had previous military service, possibly Territorial, before re-enlisting

through the 3rd Battalion Essex Regiment in September 1914. He went to France on 30th May 1915 with the 9th [Service] Battalion.

At some stage in his service he was taken prisoner, and he died of influenza whilst a prisoner of war in Germany. He was the great uncle of

Richard Wilson of Galleywood. Buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
