Private A. Wood of the Middlesex Regiment commemorated on the Civic Centre Memorial, Chelmsford may be Private G/2288 Alfred Henry Wood of the 13th (Service) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridgeshire’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) who landed in France on 4th October 1915. The battalion was part of the 73rd Brigade in the 24th Division.

The battalion participated in the Battle of the Somme. On 17th August 1916 it moved up into trenches at Flat Iron Copse. The following day Alfred Henry Wood was killed in action as his battalion attacked towards Guillemont, suffering 340 ‘other ranks’ casualties as it was driven back.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, near Albert, Somme, France. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.
